Arts Nexus is a non profit, member-based regional
arts development and cultural industry association providing services
for the arts, entertainment and cultural sector in Far North Queensland.
Based in Cairns, Arts Nexus offers a connection
and support for presenters and creators including visual artists,
craftspeople, musicians, dancers, performers, entertainers, writers,
poets, photographers, film-makers and the culturally aware!
Arts Nexus acts as region-wide infrastructure in
value-adding to the initiatives of both Government and Industry
within the region, and at State and federal levels.
It's estimated some 20,000 people are involved,
to varying degrees, in arts and culture in this region. The cultural
sector generates around $150 million per year in revenue, making
it a force that impacts on all parts of our local economy.
Arts Nexus provides access to a broad range
of services such as information and advisory services, industry
promotion, networking, referrals, project management, event coordination,
training and professional development, advocacy, planning and policy.
Arts Nexus
Mission and 2008 Program
The need for Arts Nexus was identified during the
1993 'Mapping our Cultural Future' conference and ratified in a
regional cultural development plan released in 1994.
Acting on the plan's recommendations, the
Department of State Development included arts and culture among
the industry focus groups consulted for the 2010 Regional Economic
Development Plan.
This focus group went on to form a cluster
and incorporate as the Far North Cultural Industry Association (FNCIA)
in 1996. Although operating mainly on a volunteer basis, FNCIA was
able to appoint paid staff in 1998, and establish a central city
office in 1999. In 2000, as part of our strategic planning, the
name was changed to Arts Nexus.
