Coconut Walking the Streets transformed the central business district of Cairns with exciting contemporary art and design event.

Using coconuts for inspiration, artists presented innovative art and design works in shop fronts and retail spaces throughout the city - photographs, digital works, paintings, installations, jewellery, and
functional object designs.

The souvenir guide was a hit and if you can find any copies left grab one. They are a great remainder of the the works, the festival and its participants.

Each artist's interpretation of the coconut theme was different - some exploring the material itself and others exploring the symbolic meaning of the coconut to this region.

The launch of Coconut Walking The Streets coincided with International Coconut Day, celebrated by the Asia Pacific Coconut Community on September 2. We were delighted to have an international guest from the Asia Pacific Coconut Community attend our launch

Feedback from last year's Coconut Walking The Streets was excellent.

Participating artists and businesses enjoyed the extensive media coverage and public support. For many artists the event provided great publicity and sales and when it was all over artists were already thinking about what they might do for 2003.

Coconut Walking The Streets was an independent artist-run event initiated to foster creative cultures. It was able to operate with the support of Arts Nexus, businesses and sponsors (Cairns Coconut Caravan Resort Just Purple Media, and Festival Cairns), the Queensland Arts Council (through the Regional Quick Response Grant Scheme), private funding and volunteer support.
